OUR CAMPUS

Our Home in Roxbury

The UU Urban Ministry is located in historic John Eliot Square in Roxbury, and has one of the largest greenspaces in the city .  The first thing you see on our campus is the "big white church on the hill".  The building was known as First Church Roxbury until 1976, when the UU congregation that called the church home left Roxbury due to white flight.

Since they gave the property to the UU Urban Ministry, the building is known as the Meetinghouse.  It was built in 1803, and is the fourth church built on this sight.  The Meetinghouse is the oldest standing wood-framed church in Boston.

As the largest potential event venue in the area outside of the Reggie Lewis Center, the Meetinghouse provides much-needed space in this vibrant but underserved community.  We are in the process of a capital campaign to restore the Meetinghouse. The renovations to the exterior of the building were completed last year.  The interior restoration marks the third and final phase of a multi-year effort and it is expected to cost approximately $2.8 million.

Serving Our Community and Our Mission

PG tree planting (01).jpg

We are committed to using our space to serve our community - and mission.  Our campus is a crossroads of people and cultures. In addition to the Meetinghouse, we're transforming a corner of our property into a Peace Garden as a space that can be utilized by our neighbors and program participants.

Our campus also includes the UUUM offices located in the Social Justice & Education Center and Putnam Chapel.  This space hosts many of our programs as well as community events.

This project, like so much that we do, is a collaboration between the UUUM and our neighbors.

Our gates are always open and we welcome you to our campus on 10 Putnam Street.

Please note that due to COVID-19 public health concerns, we are not renting out indoor space to outside groups at this time. However, we encourage outside groups to make use of our outdoor greenspace. To use greenspace, please contact Director of Facilities Shamika Harrison at sharrison@uuum.org
