Who We Are

Since 1826, the Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry has worked to empower Boston’s underprivileged citizens through education and advocacy. Founded by the Reverend Joseph Tuckerman, the UU Urban Ministry strives to provide the necessary support so that individuals may overcome disadvantaged circumstances through their own strengths and abilities. Over its 180-year history, the Urban Ministry has created many channels to conduct its work in addressing social issues, including settlement houses and chapels, affordable housing, community centers and service programs. UU Urban Ministry programs are designed according to the specific needs of individuals and communities; while continuing to serve Boston’s most disadvantaged people, programs may vary from one decade to the next.

Our current programs are:

Roxbury Youth Programs An out-of-school-time program that provides academic and character-building support for disadvantaged and at-risk young people.

Stand High/Stand United A weekend and summer youth-enrichment program for elementary and middle school students.

Renewal House A spiritually based emergency shelter that provides support and extensive services for individuals and their children escaping from abusive living situations.

United Souls A support group and network for men in transition.
